NEWSLETTER -June 2008

Dear Parents and Pupils,

I hope you all had a well deserved Half-Term break especially as during the next seven weeks we have a show; summer display; more exams and Epsom Festival! Don’t forget, tickets for the summer show, ‘A Lovely Pantomime’ (Sun. 13th JULY, 2:30 and 6:30p), are on sale from the Hazlitt Theatre Box office - Tel. 01622 758611 or on line http://www.hazlitttheatre.co.uk/tickets.htm. I think I have nearly everyone’s email address for those involved in the show so I will be sending out further show information shortly regarding rehearsals/times etc. I still need a few more helpers – I’ve got just the bare minimum, but so that the chaperones I do have can take a break, I need about 2 or 3 more for each show. Also the following props I still need – old wooden chairs; orange boxes/crates/beer barrels/pewter tankards. If you can help, please get in touch.

EXAM RESULTS another excellent set of results and congratulations go to Julie Cloke, Jessica Cook, Katie Hutchings, Charlotte Smith; Michelle Smith, Hannah White and Emma Young for all passing their Intermediate Ballet exam…..and to Aimee Burnham, Natasha Hutchinson, Hannah White and Yasmin McCullough (88%), for passing Intermediate Tap. I have known most of these girls since they were 3 years old and they were my first set of ‘babies’ I ever taught. It will be a sad moment for me to see Charlotte, Hannah, Emma; plus, Emily Tucker and Andrew Stickells) and of course, my own daughter, Katie, leave Prima. They are all moving on to university and really, I’ve never had such a committed and loyal group of students. They will definitely leave a hole in Prima, but hopefully they will return in three years time and in the meantime, I wish them all the best for the future and hope they enjoy their last Prima show in July! Back to the exam results, the following scored 91 - Jessica Calderwood and Kayleigh Ivey (Tap Gde 3); and Lucy Rowe (Tap Gde 4); and 90 was achieved by Katie Hutchings (Inter Ballet) and Louisa Perry (Tap Gde 3). There were several more with high 80’s marks, but I would especially like to mention two nine year olds for an amazing achievement - Annabel Gridley and Chloe Guscott. These girls took Gde 2 Ballet in December; Gde 3 Ballet in January and have now just taken Gde 4 Ballet and in all the exams have not scored less than 87%. That’s commitment!! Well done, though to everyone. Lucy Rowe, incidently, has also been nominated for the second time by an examiner this year to attend next year’s IDTA Awards.

TEACHERS we say goodbye and a big thank you to Helen McLoughlin who is expecting her first baby in August. She has been a fantastic teacher and has seen many senior students through their Inter and Advanced 1 Ballet and Modern exams and has taught three sets of GCSE Dance groups. We all wish her and the baby well and hope to see Helen back at some point in the not too distant future. Jenna Hubbard, a very popular teacher, is returning to teach a few contemporary dance lessons this half term. She was planning on returning permanently to Prima in September, but unfortunately she now has plans to move away from Kent - hopefully some of you will get a chance to see her and wish her every success.

TIMETABLE I have recently sent out an email about possible changes in September. Can I just ask that you let me know as soon as possible if your child is interested in new classes or swapping to different classes. With absolute no exaggeration, on the first day of this term, I had 12 emails/phone calls requesting changes to classes for this term (with further requests throughout the first week). It really makes it difficult for me to plan timetables when left to the last minute…. And it’s ok to contact me during school holiday periods. Some people don’t like contacting me thinking I’m having a break!! But to be honest, I prefer it as I have more time to deal with enquiries.

CONTACT the website should now be easier to load as my daughter has removed the ‘moving images’. She has, however, added further photos, so do take a look and it is largely kept up todate. Telephone - lately I’ve had 2 or 3 phone calls to my mobile whilst teaching. Can calls to my mobile just be kept for emergencies - thank you. The best time to contact me by phone is usually between 12:00 and 3:00pm and I am happy to take calls between 10:00 and 10:30pm if really important! However, the best way to contact me is via email and I usually get back to people within a couple of days. If you have any concerns and wish to talk to me personally, I’m generally free on Saturday afternoons from 3:00pm so am happy to arrange appointments for that time.

TERMS I know it’s confusing, but I still run on the old system of three terms and half-terms. I keep forgetting that schools now run on six terms. I’ve had a couple of people asking about invoices for next term (or half-term). The fees cover a 12 week period and invoices are sent out just three times a year

COSTUME RETURN I am still missing 5 black lycra dresses. They were used in a cabaret performance and a charity show last year – those who borrowed them, can you please have another look. BALLET INTER DVD’s can these also be returned – I have just had one returned out of six. Thank you.

ENGLISH YOUTH BALLET four young Prima pupils will be performing in a production of ‘Coppelia’ at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley on 22 and 23 Aug. It’s a perfect ‘first’ ballet for young children to see so if you wish to support Gina Cook, Louisa Perry and Jessica and Lewis Thornton, tickets may be purchased from the Box office Tel. 0870 060 6620 or go to www.theambassadors.com/churchill Further pupils will be dancing with Kent Youth Dance at end of Aug. but I don’t have ticket details for this yet.

PRESENTATION SHOW – Exchange, Maidstone -Sun. 14th December (afternoon)

I have decided to bring this forward from the usual Feb. time and hope it doesn’t clash with too many Christmas commitments – hence plenty of notice!! It’s a chance for me to present awards and cerificates to deserving pupils – achievement; behaviour; effort etc. and a further opportunity for selected classes to perform. However, the Exchange has now been divided into a studio theatre and a rehearsal room. I will therefore do two shorter presentations – one for under 11’s and one for 11+ yrs. I will work out a schedule at beginning of autumn term, but it will include performances from both Musical theatre classes; drama; singing; cheerleading and Dance festival numbers – plus a visit from Santa for the younger pupils’s show and for both shows, maybe Christmas carols/songs for everyone to join in with!
